Visit Nara

This long, gently curving street in Gojo is said to be the oldest street in Japan, lined with restored houses and stores from the Edo and Meiji eras (1603 - 1912). From Gojo Station, head downhill towards the river, following signs to the historic town.

The Hitotsubashi sweet shop and its quaint bridge marks the start of the historic street. With few signs of modern life and even fewer people, the effect is like walking through a film set. In autumn and winter the wooden eaves are hung with strings of drying persimmons, the town specialty. It takes around 30 minutes to walk to the next station, Yamato-Futami Station, but there are many charming small shops and cafes on the way. You can easily double back to Yoshinoguchi Station and transfer to Yoshino or visit Kashiharajingu Shrine on the way back to the Nara Park area.
