Tsubosaka-dera Temple (Minami Hokkeji Temple)

壺阪寺(南法華寺)

The mix of Japanese and Indian styles makes this temple unique. Built around 717 AD, there are several Indian style Buddhas, a Taj Mahal-style sanctuary and bas-relief carvings all in white stone; these were presented by India in thanks for the temple’s work to help leprosy sufferers. It is also known as a temple of healing. According to legend, a local shaman found a Senju Kannon (a thousand-armed Buddha) buried here, which gave him healing powers. He cured the Empress of her eye disease and she built the temple in thanks. The Senju Kannon, which can be seen in the Octagonal Hall, is still believed to cure eye ailments. The attractive complex is especially beautiful in autumn, when the bright leaves contrast with the white stone.
