Hokkedo (Sangatsudo)
東大寺 法華堂 (三月堂)
This hall is the oldest structure at Todaiji, believed to have been built between AD740 - AD747. Its name is taken from the Lotus Sutra that is recited in the hall in the third month of the year. The statues here are stunning examples of Nara period carving. The main, multi-armed figure known as the Fukukensaku Kannon is surrounded by ten figures, including fierce warrior kings. There is also a “secret” figure, Shukongō-jin, which can only be seen on December 16th each year. While the main hall of Todaiji gets crowded at peak times, few people realize the Hokkedo is here, and you can take your time to enjoy the magnificent carvings in peace.
