New Year Prayers at Kashihara Jingu
初詣(橿原神宮)
On most days Kashihara Jingu is a peaceful enclave but during hatsumode millions of visitors are said to visit to pray. The first three days of the New Year are the busiest and though crowded the atmosphere is festive with food stalls and excitement. Built in 1889, Kashihara Jingu is relatively new compared to other centuries-od shrines in Japan. It is believed that Emperor Jimu, Japan’s first emperor, acceded to the throne here. The shrine’s main hall was constructed with original structures from Kyoto’s Imperial Palace.
