Kohfukuji Takigi Noh
薪御能(興福寺)
The World Heritage Site of Kohfukiji Temple is well-known for its traditional Noh dramas, performed annually on the third Friday and Saturday in May. The open-air performances here date to the 9th century and are performed in the vicinity of takigi, or bonfires, and were originally accompanied by lavish feasts. The simple flute and drum music is a counterpoint to the elaborate costumes and masks that typify Noh. Light-hearted traditional Kyogen performances are held during intermission, just like the days of old.
