Visit Nara

Kasugataisha holds Noh dramas annually on May 16-17. The ancient, open-air plays are performed in the vicinity of takigi, or bonfires, and were originally accompanied by lavish feasts. The simple flute and drum music is a counterpoint to the elaborate costumes and masks that typify Noh. Light-hearted traditional Kyogen performances are held during intermission, just like the days of old.
