World Heritage Gangoji Temple hold its Jizoe Manto Kuyo ceremony on the evenings of August 23 and 24. Said to be a protector of children, Jizo is a popular member of the Japanese Buddhist pantheon, and this event is held in his honor. Over 10,000 candles illuminate the temple garden and stone Jizo statues lining the paths. Game stalls for the kids, festival food, and musical performances round out the event.
