Uneme Festival
采女祭
A very beautiful and slightly melancholy festival, it recalls the legend of a court lady, Uneme, who, spurned by the Emperor, supposedly drowned herself in Sarusawa Pond. A memorial is held at Uneme shrine within Kasugataisha Shrine, and a costumed procession moves from JR Nara Station up to the pond. Finally, a decorative dragon boat floats across Sarusawa Pond, with offerings to Uneme.
